Exceeding Expectations Returns to Racing

Members of Exceeding Expectations show off their medals from a recent race.

Exceeding Expectations is a program serving inner city children in San Bernardino, Calif., that has received a grant from the USA Triathlon Foundation.

The program uses triathlon to encourage kids to graduate high school and go on to college. Participants learn about a lifestyle that’s healthy and goal orientated, which is very different from their everyday lives.

2021 Update

This has been another challenging year for us all, but hope remains abundant.

With respect to COVID, our Exceeding Expectations family is largely made up of a vulnerable group, but we’ve had very few cases and no hospitalizations. And this includes the parents, who are unable to quarantine because they need to go into the working world every day.

Each kid and adult have stayed safe by taking precautions to protect themselves and others around them, including getting vaccinated when eligible. Throughout COVID, the group has continued training to stay physically fit, mentally sound and academically strong.

Return to Racing

The recent Run for Ike 5K in Palm Springs was our first in-person race for the entire group since the pandemic began. It was a day that looked and felt almost like the “old days.” One EE member, Arian, took the overall win, and three other members finished in the top 10.

Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills congratulates Arian on his overall win at the Run for Ike 5K.

Our calendar is full of races and events in the months ahead. We also have several EE kids racing at Mount San Antonio College, whose motto is “where the world’s best athletes compete.” Top track and field athletes are selected to compete at this prestigious venue, which has produced many national champions and Olympians. One of our EE members, Isi Ibarra, is coaching some of the participants, including several EE kids.

Academic Update

On the academic front, we have 13 EE kids in college.

  • Marlene and Josh are working on master’s degrees.
  • John will graduate in December 2021 with his bachelor’s degree.
  • Yoselin and Fernanda are selecting colleges as they prepare to graduate from high school in June 2022.
  • Jeffrey graduated boot camp is now a full-fledged U.S. Marine stationed in Pensacola, Fla.
